Xiaomi Claims to End Mobile Processor Project Surge

Xiaomi was planning to present its own hardware on their phones with Surge mobile processors. However, according to new information, Xiaomi put the chipset project on the shelf after the Surge S1.

An industry expert claimed that Xiaomi has given up its own developed chipset project. The company first introduced the Surge S1 processor , developed by the Pinecone division , in 2017. Although it has been suggested that Xiaomi will announce Surge S2 at MWC 2018, it was not expected.

Xiaomi was talking about working with TSMC on the processor last year, but there has been no concrete information for a long time. Finally, in 2019, it was revealed that a part of the team that developed the processor now developed artificially- assisted hardware for IoT (Internet of Things) devices .

Xiaomi will continue on its way with Qualcomm and MediaTek

The Surge S1 was a fairly basic 28 nm chip with stock ARM hardware. The chipset included eight Cortex-A53 cores and a quad-core Mali-T860 GPU. Xiaomi Mi 5c was the first and only smartphone to use this chipset. The following year, although there were many rumors pointing out the future of Mi 6c with a stronger Surge S2 , the expected announcement never came.

According to the industry expert, the developers encountered several problems during the development of the processor and put the project on the shelf. So Xiaomi will continue to use Qualcomm and MediaTek chips on their smartphones for now.

Currently, Samsung and Huawei stand out as major brands in the smartphone market that produce their own chipsets. Samsung uses Exynos and Huawei Kirin processors on their smartphones.
