Kirin 1020 to be featured in Huawei Mate 40 will be much stronger than Kirin 990

The Kirin 1020 chipset, which will be included in the Mate 40 series that Huawei will introduce in the coming periods, will offer 50% more performance compared to the Kirin 990. This chip, which will come out of the 5 nm production process, will also greatly reduce power consumption.

TSMC , one of the world's largest manufacturers for 5 nm chip production , plans to produce 5 nm chipsets in the first half of this year . At this point, Apple, the company's biggest customer, aims to switch to 5 nm chip technology with the iPhone 12 series.

Currently, research and development expenses spent on 5 nm chip production, which will only be used on Apple and Huawei devices, are said to exceed $ 500 million . This means that we will see chip wars on flagship devices that will be introduced in the coming periods .

Kirin 1020 will be 50% stronger than the previous generation:

The 5 nm process of the TSMC will come in two versions , N5 and N5P . Compared to 7 nm processors, the N5 provides a 15% performance boost and reduces power consumption by 30%. However, N5P will be 7% stronger than N5 and will reduce power consumption by 15%. At this point, the 5 nm N5 version will be put into mass production this year, but the mass production of the N5P will begin in 2021.

On the other hand, the new Kirin flagship processor, developed in cooperation with Huawei and TSMC, was first introduced in the past days. As it is claimed , this chipset, which will exit the 5 nm production process , is expected to be used in Huawei Mate 40 devices first . Thus, Mate 40 will be one of the first devices to use 5 nm technology with the iPhone 12 series.

When it comes to the nomenclature, Huawei has considered the Kirin 1020 name suitable for the 5 nm chipset that will be the successor of the Kirin 990 . Kirin 1020, which is predicted to be quite powerful, will be 50% stronger than the previous generation Kirin 990, according to rumors . However, it is stated that the CPU architecture on the chip has been upgraded from Cortex A76 to Cortex A78 . This means that Huawei will completely bypass Cortex A77, which is currently included in Snapdragon 865.
